Show Notes
- What made us decide to homeschool?
- We saw what the public schools were offering
- We wanted to teach our kids God's Word
- We wanted them to have a set time for school and then be done for the day, no homework
- We felt as though that was the way God wanted us to go.
- How do we homeschool?
- Preschool: Workbooks for math and language arts, signing videos, bible lesson, practice reading (library has books based on reading levels)
- When we move into official homeschooling beginning in Kindergarten, we will be using a set curriculum and also teaching them to play the piano
- What struggles have we dealt with?
- Focus - They have trouble right now staying focused on their tasks. However, once we get them focused they go through their work pretty quickly
- Perseverance - When it gets challenging for Sarah or she's not interested, she doesn't want to do it. We just try and be patient and let her know that she cannot play until she finishes her work. Initially she was stubborn, but with consistent training, she is slowly improving in this area
- Victories
- Sarah is reading whole books almost completely on her own, can write the whole alphabet and numbers 1-10. Sarah is also learning how to cut and paste.
- Lydia knows the whole alphabet and numbers although her writing is a bit less legible but that is to be expected with her being only 3.
- They both know quite a few signs. I'm hoping that one day it'll be like a second language for them.
- Resources we like

- More time with the children
- you decide what they learn, not people who aren't personally invested in them
- opportunity for you to learn alongside your children
- Questions about homeschool
- How do I get started? Where do I find the help I need?
- One big piece of advice I got that helped steer me towards what i was looking for was to find out your style of homeschooling. You can google this to find out more. There's classical christian education, there's unit studies, and more. Once you learn what styles seem to best suit you, you can research them a bit more and find what seems like the best fit
- Stay in touch with other moms in the trenches of homeschooling. i go to these women in my life often for advice
- Paul Washer Sermon Series (mentioned during show)
- check out a local homeschool conference where you can examine the various kinds of material that is out there
- Find out what the homeschool laws are in your area. Each state is different in what is required if you wish to homeschool
- Start simple. Don't buy 20 different curriculums that are high maintenance requiring tons of prep.
- Start the kids when they are very young too. Babies can learn. Teach them sign language. Use flash cards you print out or buy from the dollar store. Tell them the shapes and colors of items they are playing with. Do bible memorization with them and use scripture often for training and correction. Take advantage of the fact that they are sponges waiting to absorb information.
